Combined Defence Services Examination is conducted, twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission, for Recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Officers’ Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. CDS Selection Process encompasses two stages i.e. written test and SSB Interview round. In the first stage (written exam), candidates have to attempt three papers for selection in IMA, INA and AFA whereas OTA candidates have to attempt only 2 papers. Age: Minimum Age Limit 19 Years
- Indian Military Academy (IMA) and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA)
- Indian Naval Academy (INA)
- Air Force Academy (AFA)
- Graduation from a recognised university
- Engineering degree from a recognised university/institute
- Graduation (with Physics and Mathematics at Class 12) or Bachelor of Engineering
Those who are in their final year of graduation can also apply. Women candidates are only eligible to apply for OTA. Candidates both male and female must meet the physical standard specified by UPSC. - The pattern of CDS/OTS written examination consists of three papers:
- General Knowledge, English, and Mathematics for 100 marks each.
- Physical Eligibility for Females to join CDS
Females can join the force via the OTA examination but the eligibility criteria for females are a bit different than for males.
- They have to be 19 years old before attempting to write the exam and they cannot be more than 25 years old to appear for the examination.
- Some believe that tattoos might get one disqualified but they are allowed only if they are on an inner elbow to the writing area.
- Candidates who are unmarried, widowed, or even divorced can feel free to appear for the exam.
- Females are required to have at least a height of 148cm.
You can join the CDS course in Meerut to prepare for the examination. you must know that OTA in CDS is applicable for both men and women. The service via OTA is called Short Service Commission and is allowed to serve up to 10 to 14 years. Aspirants who wish to have more than 14 years of commission should apply for the permanent commission. PC request will be granted only if the aspirant is worthy enough to hold the service for a much longer time.

What is the syllabus for the CDS/OTA Written examination?
Aspirants will have to appear for the CDS written exam to be tested for their knowledge in English, Polity, History, Maths, Geography, Current Affairs, Physics, Economics, Life Science, and more. To clear the OTA exam, one needs to prepare well for the CDS as the syllabus is the same. However, for OTA one doesn’t have to sit around for the mathematics exam.
Results of CDS/OTA examination
UPSC announces the results of the written examination within 3 to 4 months after the written examination. You can view your results on their website, being a competitive examination, there is no specific cut-off percentage for passing the exam. Candidates that perform excellently are sent the call letters for further interviews.
